Viola Vida

Where were you born? Year, Country, State. Where do you live currently?

I was born and raised in Panamá, Republic of Panamá.

I have recently taken residence in Miami, FL.

What initially drew you to drawing pretty pictures?

I have always been drawn to art from a young age. Garfield was my favorite character to draw. My parents fostered my interest and valued my work always. I have them to thank for that.

Who is your favorite skateboarder, living or dead? Any ties to skateboarding?

Bart Simpson

inspired me to get a skateboard back in middle school. Sad to report, it really didn’t stick with me.There wasn’t a nearby park to practice nor was I allowed to be out and about in our neighborhood.

Who is your favorite artist, living or dead?

I love artists that keep their art pure and as Picasso would say “take the dust off everyday life.” For me, these artists are self-taught / folk artists. Frida Kahlo and Bill Traylor are my favorites.

When you're not creating amazing works of art, what do you enjoy doing?

I’m a teaching artist working with at risk youth collaborating with other artists in the community. I also love spending time with my family, listening to music and doing my best to help the environment.

Who are your biggest influences?

In this particular piece, I’m emulating the work of Steve Terlizzese. He is a dear friend and fellow artist. He taught me this style of mosaic. This method has added onto my passion for reusing materials. It is fun and whimsical, but a lot of hard work.

What mediums do you enjoy working in?

I work in various mediums, right now dictated by what’s available to be reused. I would eventually like to work more in 3D forms
