Rebel Soul Studio
Where were you born? Year, Country, State. Where do you live currently?
I was born in High Point, North Carolina USA in 1982. I'm currently living in the awesome city of Raleigh, North Carolina with my amazing wife and my rambunctious boxer Bella!
What initially drew you to drawing pretty pictures?
I knew I wanted to pursue a career as an artist from the moment I picked up my very first Crayon! From that moment on, I've been putting art on every surface imaginable from school walls and desks, paper, canvas, guitars, shoes, t-shirts, and skateboards!
Who is your favorite skateboarder, living or dead? Any ties to skateboarding?
Growing up in the early 80's and 90's I was really into skaters like Christian Hosoi, Tony Hawk and Steve Cabellero. I never got to their level of expertise on a deck but I always found their style and tricks mesmerizing! No official ties to the skate industry other than just being a life long fan of the artwork and innovation that always seemed to be at the forefront of the skate movement!!
Who is your favorite artist, living or dead?
I have many favorites when it comes to art but I've always been inspired by the lowbrow and kustom kulture art movements that included many great artists like Robert Williams, Kenneth Howard (Von Dutch), and Dirty Donny just to name a few!
When you're not creating amazing works of art, what do you enjoy doing?
Outside of art, my other major passions include playing guitar and tinkering with classic cars and trucks. I would say that those outside hobbies continually add fuel and inspiration into all of the artwork I create...from the curves of the instruments and vehicles, the brilliant metalflake and custom paintjobs, down to the characters and icons of both the music industry and the hot rod and custom car movement.
Who are your biggest influences?
My biggest influences include Robert Williams, Jim Phillips and Jimbo Phillips of Santa Cruz skateboards, and Jeral Tidwell. I have always enjoyed the intricate details, hidden elements of humor, and over the top, eye-popping art that all of these guys have created throughout their careers!
What mediums do you enjoy working in?
At the moment I really enjoy working in a variety of mixed-media applications with my art. I often include acrylic paint, metalflake, and markers into my creative process. These materials seem to yield the best results for my illustrative and bold style!
Anything else you want to tell?
It has been a lifelong goal of mine to create and share my art with people all over the world and from all walks of life! I am super stoked to be participating along side of some of the most amazing artists I've ever seen by working with ArtDeckCo! I am beyond grateful for the opportunity and I hope to create many more mind-blowing and original skateboard art decks in the future. I also hope to inspire the next generation of artists to find their voice and make as much noise as possible all while leaving a positive mark on this world!
