Maria Gonzalez

Where were you born? Year, Country, State. Where do you live currently?

I was boring in Chicago, IL in 1986. I went away for school, but I am back in Chicago now.

What initially drew you to drawing pretty pictures?

I have been drawing since I can remember. My parents would enter me in art/drawing competitions at a very young age. It was my favorite subject in school and all that I ever wanted to do.

Who is your favorite skateboarder, living or dead? Any ties to skateboarding?

I would have to say it is Tony Hawk but only because I grew up with my cousin talking about him all the time.

Who is your favorite artist, living or dead?

I have many favorite artists. I love the technique and inspiration from Koralie and Supakitch.  I love how personal and colorful Frida Kahlo's work is. I also love the work of Mike Perry and all his patterns.

When you're not creating amazing works of art, what do you enjoy doing?

I work as an advertising agency art director by day so most of my free time is spent creating my own pieces of art. I really enjoy it and it relaxes me. I also like to travel a lot. Traveling inspires me and it influences a lot of my work.

Who are your biggest influences?

My biggest influence is the environment that I live in and learning about different types of people and their traditions. All my pieces are inspired by the art/patterns of different cultures. I am specifically inspired by Native American, Mexican and Indian art and mythology.

What mediums do you enjoy working in?

I enjoy screenprinting patterns and then collaging those patterns to make a figure/design. I work a lot in mix media- acrylics, spray paint, screenprinting and printmaking. Recently I have been creating paper mache sculptures of some of my 2D characters. I enjoy playing around with different mediums and learning how to use them through trial and error.
