Mab Graves

What mediums do you enjoy working in?

Pretty much any of the brush mediums. I love oils, acrylic, gouache, watercolors. Anything I can smooth down with tiny hairs!

Anything else you want to tell?

Here's my bio and links:

Mab Graves is a Contemporary Pop-Surrealist artist and illustrator living and painting in a converted 1800’s tavern in a small corner of the dusty Midwest.

Her work is inspired deeply by fairy tales and old classic literature. She adores narrative.  She blames this on her parents who unrelentingly read aloud to her and her three sisters as small, impressionable children.

Mab’s passion for creation has been an overwhelming obsession since she could grip a crayon, at about the age of 6 months. She spent her childhood and teen years adoring graphite and pen mediums (but being very suspicious of paints) until she discovered painting in early 2009, and then it was all over.

A self-taught artist, Mab’s work has been shown is galleries both nationally and internationally. Her work has been sold in more than 56 countries. Mab’s art has appeared in many print articles in books and magazines and in 2013 she published her first book of paper dolls with Dover Publishing.

She currently lives, works and dreams in Indianapolis, IN.

Where were you born? Year, Country, State. Where do you live currently

I was born in the year 1923 in a little town outside of Neverwhere. Currently I live in an old converted tavern in a dusty corner of the Midwest.

What initially drew you to drawing pretty pictures

Obsession. Drawing has never not been with me.

Who is your favorite artist, living or dead?

Without a doubt - Genaddy Spirin – he’s an amazing Russian illustrator and has been my art crush since my early teens ^_^

When you're not creating amazing works of art, what do you enjoy doing

There is something else you can do?! I’m a passionate workaholic and art addict. I work about 15 hours a day – 7 days a week +__+

Who are your biggest influences

I love Vladimir Nabokov, Anne Rice, Neil Gaiman, Wes Anderson, C.S. Lewis… mostly enchanting writers. I listen to audio books while I paint so they have all become close friends ^_^
