BETTY MARIE

Where were you born? Year, Country, State. Where do you live currently?

I was born in 1988, in San Francisco, California, but raised in Oakland. I moved to Portland, Oregon in 2006, where I've been living ever since.

What initially drew you to drawing pretty pictures?

I've always loved drawing, since I was little. I wanted to be an artist when I grew up. Then I had to pick a more practical career so I would have a major in college so I decided to try nursing. I dropped out of nursing school after 2 years to become an EMT. I hated my EMT job so I learned how to tattoo. Now I make a living as an artist. Should have just stuck to my guns in the first place.

Who is your favorite skateboarder, living or dead? Any ties to skateboarding?

I don't have a deep connection to skateboarding, I tried to learn once but never got past the "ollie". My favorite skater has always been my little brother. He taught me everything I don't know about the sport.

Who is your favorite artist, living or dead?

I can't just choose one favorite artist. I love the paintings of Michael Hussar, Brian M Viveros, Ray Caesar, Alphonse Mucha, and Gustav Klimt. I love Bernini's sculptures . I also admire both the tattoos and fine art created by Justin Hartman, Eckel, Pari Corbett, Big Meas, and Scott Campbell, to name a few.

When you're not creating amazing works of art, what do you enjoy doing?

My other hobbies include riding motorcycles, racing sidecars, camping, and baking.

Who are your biggest influences?

My biggest influences are my coworkers, my tattoo mentor Dustin Ranck, and a litany of amazing tattooers (see #4 for a start). Oh yeah and Jesus, Oprah and Elvis, duh.

What mediums do you enjoy working in?

mostly tattoo and watercolor. I've only just begun venturing into acrylics, still working out the kinks for sure, but I'm having fun with it.

Anything else you want to tell?

Thanks to everyone involved in putting on the show and to all who came out to view it!
